Prepare CAD data for a manufacturing enquiry.

Manufacturing from a CAD file requires more than sending a 3D model. Geometry, material, function and revision must be consistent so that BEICK can assess feasibility and the work involved. This checklist supports enquiries for CNC components and FDM 3D printing.

Which file formats are useful?

  • STEP or SAT: CAD geometry for technical coordination.
  • PDF drawing: Functional dimensions, tolerances, threads, material and surface requirements.
  • STL or 3MF: Existing print data for reviewing a 3D-printing project.
  • DXF or DWG: Drawing data where needed for the agreed scope.
  • Native Autodesk files: Transfer by prior agreement.

Not every project needs every format. Provide the available data and identify the authoritative document. Differences between model and drawing must be resolved before production.

Information to include with the file.

  1. Part reference and unambiguous revision with change date
  2. Units and complete dimensions
  3. Material or required material properties
  4. Quantity and expected repeat demand
  5. Function, installation conditions and loading
  6. Critical fits, threads, sealing surfaces and datums
  7. Finish, secondary operations and agreed inspection requirements
  8. Requested date and scope of supply

Give different variants distinct references. A set of similarly named files without an approved revision creates avoidable questions.

What if there is no complete drawing?

A dimensioned hand sketch, photographs and an existing part can support an initial technical discussion. They do not automatically replace complete manufacturing data. Missing dimensions and unclear functions first need to be established and agreed.

Data review is not automatic production approval.

BEICK reviews the supplied information for plausibility and manufacturability within the agreed scope. Questions about dimensions, material or use are clarified together. Calculations, certification and special inspection reports are included only by explicit agreement.

The next step may be mechanical manufacturing from drawings or FDM contract manufacturing. Share only documents you are entitled to provide for this purpose.
